A.To install vCenter Server , we need vCenter DVD.

B.Map iso to Windows 2003 EE x64 Virtual Machinc

Workstation->Select 2003 EE VM tab->right click ->Settings- >Hardware tab->CD/DVD->Select Use ISO image option.....

Check both "Connected" and "Connect at power on"

C.Login to 2003 EE VM , open CD drive

D.Double click the CD

After installing vCenter, How can I know whether vCenter is installed or not?

-No Desktop Shortcut is available.
-Start->All Programs->Check for vmware folder and the vCenter Server.

run "services.msc" -> Check for "vmware virtual center Server" service.

if "vmware virtual center Server" is available, then vcenter server is installed successfully.

How can I know vCenter is started or not?

run "services.msc" -> Check for "vmware virtual center Server" service

if service status is "started" , then vcenter is running
if service status is "stopped" , then start the service.

snapshots

What is a snapshot?

Snapshot is a point-in-time backup of a VM.

We can take snapshots when machine is ON or OFF

Powered off Snapshot consumes lesser storage than Powered on snapshot

we can go back and forth between multiple snaphshots

How to take a snapshot?
vSphere Client->ESX ->Select VM->Right Click->Take snapshot

Where can I see the snapshots ?
vSphere Client->ESX ->Select VM->Right Click->Snapshot manager

How can I go to particular snapshot?
vSphere Client->ESX ->Select VM->Right Click->Snapshot manager->Select the snapshot->
Click "Go to"

What is revert to snapshot?
going back to the current snapshot

What are the snapshot files and where are they saved?

.vmsd - this contains information about all the snapshots
1 VM has only 1 vmsd file.
.vmsn - When a Snpahot is taken the VM memory contents will be saved in this file
- every snapshot has 1 vmsn file

.vmdk -vmdk stores the actual storage contents
every snapshot has 1 vmdk file

When we take a snapshot what happens?

Two files will be created in VM folder

.Vmsn file which contains Memory informations
.vmdk file which contains the actual storage contents

and .vmsd will be updated.

How can we see these files?

Select the VM ->Summary tab->Select the data store-> right click->Browse->Select the vm Folder->Open

Software Initiator properties section
Select Configure tab->check Enable
Click OK
4.Provide iQN details to ESX Server.

Select iscsi Software Adapter (vmhba33)->properties->

Select Static discovery tab
Provide SAN Array Hostname/IP
Provide IQN address
(Use the SAN Administrator mail as a reference)
Click OK

5.Scan the Software initiator (vmhba33)
vSphere->ESX->Configuration->Storage adapters->
Select "Rescan All"

If LUN is properly scanned,
it will be listed under "View section"

6.Format the LUN , if not yet done.

Storage type

3.After a minute , Power off the host ESX1 abruptly
(Simulate the Host failure)
4.Wait for 5 minutes
VMa will be automatically restarted on ESX2

Problems we faced While converting (IN Lab)

1. User names should be fully qualified.
If machine is not in Domain
HostnameAdministrator (ex: CloudxpAdministrator)
If machine is in domain
DomainNameAdministrator (ex: cloudsoftAdministrator)
2.Blank passwords are not accepted

How to set Password.
Right Click MyComputer->Manage
->Local Users and Groups
->Users
->Select User
->Right click
->Set paasword.
3.Source machine should ping from vmware converter machine

4.Disable firewall on source machine
run "firewall.cpl" -> ...
5.the operation could not be completed for Machine nameAdmin$

Check network share to the Source Machine.
If it is not successful do the following steps
a.run secpol.msc
->Local Policies
->security options
->network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts
->Change the value to : Classic-Local users
